There are number of similarities between Ukrainians and Russians but yet there is much dissimilarity between the two nationalities. However a lot of people still find it difficult to distinguish between the two and what is meant by being Ukrainian and Russian. Even though people from both countries share similar race and history they still have their unique traditions. In the past Russia conquered most of the Ukrainian lands but eventually Ukraine became an independent state on August 24th, 1991. Currently the native language in Ukraine is Ukrainian however in some parts people still speak Russian.
Ukrainians are East Slavic ethic group which is located in the central part of Eastern Europe and is the sixth-largest nation in Europe. Ukraine is quite an interesting country in regards to language. Ukrainian is the only official language there however, Ukraine is very much a bilingual country with a roughly 50-50 split between Russian and Ukrainian. Religion in Ukraine has a somewhat different “mix” of faiths as compared to religion in Russia where region was once home to rather large Muslim and Jewish communities, Islam and Judaism have diminished significantly from their historic heights.
Today Religion in Ukraine is predominately Christian, with greater than 90% of religiously active citizens belonging to Orthodox, Catholic or Protestant denominations. Traditions are like the heart of a Ukrainian culture, they determine the way they live and the values they hold, the foods they eat, the clothes they wear. For example family is very important for the Ukrainians. In fact traditions in Ukraine are interesting and unique. Also Ukrainians are very hospitable. As their guest, you will receive red-carpet treatment. Generally includes heavily-laden tables, gifts, and many toasts.
Ukraine was known as the breadbasket of the world. Indeed its rich humus soil produces grain in great abundance. Therefore Ukrainians regard bread as one of the holiest of all foods. Ukraine is also known for their great traditions and of course the most beautiful and melodious language in the world after Italian. There are over 100 languages spoken in Russia however Russian is official language throughout the nation. Russia is the largest country in the world therefore religion plays a prominent role in the public and spiritual life of today’s Russia.
The majority of believers belong to the Orthodox Christian denomination. Russia is indeed a unique country. Of course old traditions are passed on from generation to generation. First, there is a big difference between the Russian tradition of hospitality and a friendly attitude towards guests in other countries of the world. For example Russians love to accept guests and make great hosts. Russians like visiting each other, meeting in friendly companies for dinner. Second, Russians display special generosity and goodwill to guests from other cities and countries.
For example if you are visiting Russia and staying with a Russian friend, they will be very pleased to show you around and guide you to the most interesting places. Lastly Russia is known for its natural vegetation and soils. Most important is that over 45 percent of Russian land is forest where most vegetation and soils are found. In addition Russia is also famous for the mineral resources it has. It is especially rich in mineral fuels, containing the world’s largest natural gas reserves, second largest coal reserves, and eighth largest oil reserves.
In conclusion Russians are not Ukrainians. Both Russians and Ukrainians are very hospitable people. As a whole guests and visitors are always treated with honor and often offered tea and coffee and some food. Russian as well as Ukrainian cultures are similar in many aspects. Even though Russian and Ukrainian languages belong to the Slavic branch they both use a Cyrillic alphabet of 32 letters. In other words they are very similar in many ways but yet they are two different countries with their similar yet unique principles.
