To some individuals, this type of convenience is a blessing, whereas others who lack the proper understanding and discretion believe this convenience is considered a curse. The abundance of information on the Internet makes it easy for students to look up, pick, and choose information at his or her leisure without ever needing to question the validity of the documents or perform extensive research.
Russell (2009) explained how a librarian who had various meeting with instructors from a universities who would express concerns that “students lack the understanding of what constitutes good quality scholarly information” (p. 92). In the career field of education it is important not to allow information literacy to influence scholarship, practice, and leadership in a negative manner, but to use this to educate students on more appropriate and responsible ways to research, analyze, and apply his or her findings. In school, students often encounter a problem with validating the information acquired for a research topic.
With the increase in technology, finding information is easier and convenient; however students frequently perform broader searches that tend to not address the specific topic he or she is researching (Holliday & Fagerheim, 2006). Students tend to only focus on finding the information and not whether or not it is correct. Holliday and Fagerheim (2006) discovered that, “Students are fairly confident is his or her search capabilities, but in reality it tends to be superficial and focus on the assignments requirements, familiarity, and convenience instead of searching for the best information, which addresses all their needs” (p. 70). Educators must face this situation when it is first discovered explaining to the students the importance behind obtaining and using only scholarly, peer-reviewed documents. If the importance of validating his or her resources is instilled upon him or her at the beginning stages, maybe the fundamentals can stay within him or her throughout their educational experience. In addition, to the unlimited supply of information there is an unlimited amount of information, which is based solely on opinions and lack the documentation to support those opinions.
Within the elements of practice, educators must implement the same strategies for researching while he or she is teaching their students. Problems are more difficult to solve when one lacks access to proper information is crucial to good decision-making (University of Phoenix, 2006). When the acceptable and appropriate use of literacy information is taught in the classroom it can solidify the efforts of the teachers in his or her attempt to educate students on the importance of proper use of information literacy.
Badke (2009) explained that “Educators have contributed greatly valuable teaching resources to the Internet, and have encouraged students to use discrimination in choosing websites. However, educators did not provide systematic guidance for using this information in the new age of technology” (p. 48). To correct effectively this problem the guidance must be implemented in both the library and in one’s own Internet research as well as presenting this research to the class as a model.
Leadership positions as well as leaders have also been affected by the growing availability of information to researchers. Turusheva (2009) discovered that educational leaders such as teachers and counselors must “constantly develop faculty information competence, which includes educating staff on competence development, and the faculty resource base provision and development” (p. 131). In conclusion, information literacy has influenced greatly today’s society in many ways.
While allowing students a quick and easy access to tons of information from over the world. However, an individual must be cautious with the great power. The cliche goes with great power comes great responsibility. In scholarship, practice, and leadership regarding education it is pertinent to teach correctly and model the skills needed to research, analyze, and place information literacy into practice. The practical application of information literacy will also increase scholarly pursuits.
The increase in the amount of scholarly pursuits will in return increase the practice of the information literacy. This can also increase the potential for individuals to obtain leadership position in the workforce. Without information literacy there would be no leadership and without leadership the advancements in society would not continue.
