Krystina Leadbetter Prof. Nielson English 102 WP#2-First Draft Titile Introduction To whom this concerns. Actually this concerns everyone. We are in a state of crisis. This crisis is not in the form of a war, unemployment, or the lack of health care but it comes in the form of teenage suicide. Over the past month more than a handful of young people have taken their own lives because they were being bullied at school. These young kids were not bullied because they dressed differently or they were poor they were bullied because they were homosexual.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender children are being targeted at school and being bullied to the point that they feel they have no other choice but to take their life. They are being told they are an abomination and that they are going to burn in hell. Some of these kids are even being followed home and having eggs thrown at them or their homes spray painted. In a place such as a school where everyone should feel safe to be who they are and not have to be in fear of what is around the next corner schools are a place of horror for most kids in the LGBT community.

How is it that in today society that we as Americans can be filled with so much hate? This is a hate and intolerance that is being passed down from parent to child and then it repeats when that child has his or her own kids. This cycle of hate and intolerance needs to stop. We live in the best country in the world and yet it is not safe for the kids of the LGBT community to be themselves and go to school. It is not just the kids in the school that are doing the bullying. Teacher, counselors, and principals are turning their heads has it happening and doing nothing.

School board members are posting blogs about how all the homosexuals should die. It baffles me that we live in the United States of America the land of the FREE and the home of the BRAVE and yet these kids are not free at all and no one is brave enough to stop what is going on. Ones we have lost The School system Since when is it okay for teachers, counselors, and principals to turn their head and look the other way when they see someone being called names or being beat up at school?

How is it that every school seems to have counselors and school psychiatrist and yet no one has their door open for the children of the LGBT community? In doing my research for this paper I call eight different middle schools and ten different high schools in the phoenix area and no one would talk to me. I left countless voicemails for the counselors, psychiatrists, and principals and not one person took the time to call me back.

I even went into the schools myself to talk to these people in person and was told they didn’t have time to see me or they left me waiting for more than hour before telling me “something just came up. ” That sounds like a line someone would use to get out of a date they did not want to go on. When I went online to check the school systems anti-gay bullying policy I found nothing. The school districts do have a bullying, anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policy but at this time it does not include sexual orientation and gender identity.

Caleb Laieski who 15 and a student at Willow Canyon High School in Surprise, Arizona told NBC news in an article but out by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) “There are a lot of teacher that when people say you’re gay, or they call me a faggot, or even some death threats have been made to me in the classroom, I do see teacher, they hear it and everything, and they choose not to intervene. ” Laieski also states in this article that despite the anti-harassment policy anti-gay harassment is still happening.

The ACLU reports in its article that a report by “safe schools watch dog that the Gay Lesbian Staright Education Network found that over 85% of the gay students in public schools have been subject to anti-gay slurs from their fellow students and some have heard such slurs from teachers and administrators, as well. ” The article also states in the same report that more than half of the LGBT students feel unsafe at school. Making sure that those LGBT students feel safe at school is going to work. Everyone who works in the schools along with all the parents are going to have to teach their children it is okay for people to be different.

It is what makes each of unique. But this is not going to happen when members of school boards post of their blogs how they hate gays and are glad that they cannot procreate. Anderson Cooper on CNN 360 interviewed the vice-president of Arkansas School Board Member Clint McCance who posted such saying on his facebook page. He also posted that he “enjoys the fact that [gay people] give each other AIDS and die. ” He used the words “fag” and “queer” multiple times in his blog. He even went on to say that if one of his daughter is a lesbian he will disown her and through her out.

In the interview McCance had with Anderson Cooper that was put on line at CNN. com Mr. McCance back peddled on his words. He went on to apologize and say he would never wish for any child to die of suicide. McCance also said he feels genuinely bad for adding more pain to the families that have lost children to suicide. I have watched this interview a few times now and every time I watch it I cannot help but to thing that he is not sorry for what he said but he is sorry that he got caught and now is the star of his one controversy. His life has been turned upside down with the attention that his comments have made.

He is resigning from his position which I feel is the best thing for him to do since there are over 60,000 likes on the Facebook page to have him fired. I cannot seem to comprehend what was going through McCance’s mind when he wrote this hateful blog on his public Facebook page. It is this kind of behavior that fuels the bullies and lets them believe what that they are doing is okay. People in the role of authority need to be role models of good behavior and kindness not role models of hate and ignorance.
