ENGINEER GREGORIO G. SANCHEZ, JR. Founder Lacto Bacillus Pafi Techno Resources Corp. Innovation Entrepreneur 2005 Engr. Gregorio G. Sanchez just had to find a way to keep alive the hundreds of piglets in his livelihood program. A kitchen experiment resulted in a food supplement formula that fattened the piglets and eventually, became the foundation of a full-blown business. Engr. After returning from the US in 1983 following the assassination of Ninoy Aquino, he became a street parliamentarian. Engr. It was between his appointments to the Provincial Board when Engr. Sanchez developed Lactopafi Probiotic Bacteria. He was led to do research on lacto bacillus after his pig dispersal program failed because of the piglets’ malnutrition. He performed countless experiments with only pots, pans and a small tank for equipment.

His persistence yielded a food supplement that would suppress bad bacteria in livestock. Those who witnessed the positive effect on livestock urged Sanchez to produce a health drink for human consumption. He developed Lacto Pafi Probiotic Bacteria, currently among the superior probiotic bacillus strains in the world (probiotics are dietary supplements containing live bacteria taken orally to restore beneficial bacteria to the body). Those who took the concoction claim to have been healed from various ailments. Lacto Pafi’s reputation spread by word of mouth and through testimonies broadcast in local radio.

The product was registered with the Bureau of Food and Drugs and Sanchez decided to manufacture it commercially. Engr. Sanchez also developed new products with the lactobacillus component such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and other personal care products. Lacto Pafi products have reached Norway, France, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Japan, and the US. Engr. Sanchez is also breaking into the rest of the Southeast Asian region and China. For his contributions to business and the community, he was awarded Most Outstanding Alumni of the University San Jose-Recoletos in 2003.

In 2005, his product was cited as Most Outstanding Lactobacillus Health Drink and Best Pro-Biotic Supplement by the Philippine Marketing Excellence Award Group and the National Product Quality Excellence Awards Group, respectively. The product was approved in 2005 by the US Food and Drug Administration. BRYAN C. TIU Founder Teriyaki Boy, Inc. Young Entrepreneur 2005 Mr. Bryan Tiu grew up absorbing the entrepreneurial culture of Divisoria where his parents ran a textile business. Most of his father’s clients were Japanese and his exposure to them led to his appreciation of Japanese culture.

As an aficionado of Japanese cuisine, Mr. Tiu saw a gap between Japanese fine dining and low-end Japanese restaurants. He saw this gap as a potential niche and was confident that he could provide good Japanese food without necessarily hurting the diners’ pockets. In 2001, Mr. Tiu established his first Japanese casual dining restaurant in Madison Square Greenhills. The restaurant was named Teriyaki Boy, introducing the image of an animated Japanese boy to appeal to a more relaxed target market. Teriyaki Boy started to attract adolescents and young working professionals.

Since then, it has built a loyal following from the C and B markets. By 2005, Teriyaki Boy had grown into a chain of 10 restaurants in the Metro Manila area. Teriyaki Boy’s swift and steady growth prompted Mr. Tiu to consider a merger with a company that could ensure Teriyaki Boy’s long-term presence in the industry. After a year of careful consideration, he signed a merger with the Lorenzo Group in late 2005. The Lorenzo Group now controls 70% of the Teriyaki Boy, and Mr. Tiu retains 30% ownership. This decision, he believes, was a major breakthrough in assuring Teriyaki Boy’s future by stabilizing its presence in the industry.

The merger has also allowed Mr. Tiu to focus on the aspects of business closest to his heart: site development and research and development for Teriyaki Boy. Entrepreneur Of The Year Philippines 2004 Woman Entrepreneur 2004 In 1940, when Ms. Socorro C. Ramos was approaching 18, she began working as a salesgirl in Goodwill Bookstore in Escolta. The store was owned by her brother and his wife.

The store was located on the ground floor of the building that housed Panciteria Nacional. Later on, because of her selling skills, she was put in charge of the store. She married Jose Ramos and together they started National Book Store. After overcoming many hurdles brought by the Japanese occupatiom, fires, and natural disasters, National Book Store made its transition from a general merchandise store to a store that sells more than books. Upon finally settling in a nine-story building along Avenida Rizal in 1965, National Book Store has been growing nonstop.

It has lived up to its name, selling school books, office supplies and even greeting cards. In 1973, Ms. Ramos successfully obtained licenses to reprint Hallmark greeting cards. She also convinced publishing giants like McGraw Hill, Prentice Hall, and Addison-Wesley to allow National Book Store to reprint textbooks, making them much more affordable to Filipinos. Today, nearly 65 years after the Ramos couple opened the first National Book Store in Escolta, the red and white colors of the company’s brand are seen in over 70 locations nationwide.

In 1996, the family opened Powerbooks to address the reading public’s need for specialty books at affordable prices. “Nanay Coring,” as she is fondly called, also deals with her 2,500 people with motherly concern, and has been rewarded with the loyalty of her employees and a relatively low turnover rate. Among her awards are the Agora Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship (1991) and the DTI Outstanding Filipino Retailer Award (2001). In the next five years, Ms. Ramos and her family plan to increase their stores to a hundred.

Many communities still lack access to affordable books and school supplies, and Ms. Ramos’ goal is to widen National Book Store’s reach in the Visayas and Mindanao. Gozon is credited for the impressive turnaround in recent years of GMA Network, Inc. , a conglomerate of companies engaged in radio and TV broadcasting, post production services, filmmaking, music recording, and new media. Atty.

Gozon was part of the triumvirate which, in the mid-1970’s, brought GMA from the original American owner, Mr. Robert “Uncle Bob” Stewart. The other two major owners were Gozon’s brother-in-law Menardo Jimenez and former Rizal Congressman Gilberto Davit, now represented by chief operating officer EVP Jimmy Davit, Jr. At first, Atty. Gozon served as GMA’s Chairman while Jimenez served as CEO. GMA occupied the No. 1 slot for some time, but slipped to second place in the mid-1980s. When Atty. Gozon assumed leadership of the network in 2000, he rallied everyone to strive to be No. 1 again. Meneses is a big man in the pharmaceutical industry. The Founding Chairman and CEO of Tynor Drug House, Inc. established the company in 1978 as a manufacturer and distributor of locally produced and Swiss-made pharmaceutical products. After graduating with a Humanities degree from Ateneo de Manila on a scholarship, Mr. Meneses was hired as a sales representative for Swiss pharmaceutical company Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis).

After several years of working in the industry, he learned the trade and decided to put up his own company: Tynor Drug House, Inc. Mr. Meneses started out with me-too products but soon realized that to succeed in the industry, one has to constantly innovate. Small Business Entrepreneur 2004 Ng Khai Development Corporation’s story begins in Cebu, with a man whose passion for computers matched his drive to become a successful entrepreneur. Mr. Wilson P. Ng was born in 1965 to a Filipino-Chinese family where he says “being an entrepreneur was expected. ” Mr. Ng discovered his passion for computers in college and followed a career in Information Technology after graduation.

But he had to forgo his plan of pursuing his own business when his father passed away in 1989, leaving him in charge of the family business. RODRIGO E. RIVERA, SR. Chairman & CEO RD Corporation Agribusiness Entrepreneur 2004 Mr. Rodrigo E. Rivera, Sr. was a banker for 20 years before he decided to put up his own company, RD Pawnshop, with very limited capital in 1976. While the pawnshop business was flourishing, Mr.

Rivera and his wife invested their earnings with other enterprises that similarly prospered. Mr. Rivera also attracted former colleagues in the banking industry to help him out in his business, making sure that the business units were growing while new investments were prudently planned and executed. In less than two decades, the family business grew into a group of 42 companies and subsidiaries. RD Corporation is the holding and managing entity. The flagship company is RD Fishing Industry, Inc. which serves the global market.

Fresh tuna, the main produce, and canned products are exported to Europe and the USA, Japan and other countries, while local brand Diana is sold in the Philippines. PEDRO President & CEO Lamoiyan Corporation Socially Responsible Entrepreneur 2004 In the late 1970s, Mr. Cecilio K. Pedro’s Aluminum Containers, Inc. , was the major supplier of aluminum collapsible toothpaste tubes to Colgate-Palmolive and the Philippine Refining Company. However, in 1985, these companies began using plastic laminated tubes. Mr. Pedro had to close his factory but soon realized his old equipment could still be put to good use.

He reopened his factory as Lamoiyan Corporation, now known as the manufacturer of toothpaste brands Hapee and Kutitap. Mr. Pedro succeeded in making Hapee the No. 3 toothpaste brand in the country, the first Filipino to ever penetrate the toothpaste market dominated by multinational companies. He has since diversified his product line to include Dazz dishwashing paste and liquids, Tenderly fabric enhancer, Fash detergent, and Gumtech, a special gum-formula toothpaste. Mr. Pedro has chosen to use his entrepreneurial skills to help provide opportunities to others.

A staunch advocate of the hearing-impaired, he helps provide free college education to at least 200 hearing-impaired students through the Deaf Evangelistic Alliance Foundation, Inc. (DEAF), which he currently chairs. He also employs 30 hearing-impaired staff in his company, and helps provide them with free housing. To narrow the communication gap between his hearing-impaired and hearing personnel, he has also required his managers to learn sign language. Mr. Pedro hopes to establish Lamoiyan in neighboring countries such as China, Vietnam, and Indonesia, and later on to become the preferred brand in Asia.

Among the awards he has received are the Outstanding Filipino Retailer by the Philippine Retailers Association in 2001, the TOYM for Business Leadership in 1991, and the Agora Award for Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship in 1991. Tony Tan Caktiong truly has something to be happy about. What started as a franchise of Magnolia Ice Cream House turned into the undisputed leader in the Philippine fast food industry-this despite competition from the number one fast food chain in the world. Since its incorporation in 1978, Jollibee Foods Corporation has seen several milestones, reaching P500 million sales mark in 1984, joining in the Philippines’ Top 100 corporations in 1987, breaking the P1 billion sales marin in 1989, and becoming the first food service company to be listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange in 1993.

Today, Jollibee commands 65% of the market and leads in the three major segments — Jollibee in chicken and burgers, Chowking in oriental fast food, and Greenwich in pizza and pasta. Figaro Coffee, Inc. Small Business Entrepreneur 2003 Pacita Juan’s willingness to take risks, coupled with her passion for coffee, led her to create Figaro. Together with friends, Juan opened the first Figaro coffee shop in 1993 before Starbucks and Seattle’s Best were introduced to the country. Figaro is now the second largest coffee shop chain in the country, grabbing 30% market share. It is, in fact often mistaken for a foreign brand. From its first store in Makati, Figaro now has more than 30 in the Metro Manila and an outlet in Hong Kong. Juan is now keen on settling up shops in Vietnam, Singapore and China.

While growing the business, CEO Juan saw firsthand the dismal state of local coffee planters. She felt strongly that something had to be done to improve the situation. Through the Figaro foundation, she invites her employees and customers to contribute time, effort and resources to projects that support the local coffee industry such as the Save the Barako tree-planting activities and the Adopt-a-Coffee-Farm project. Through Adopt-a-Coffee-Farm, Figaro taps idle or underutilized farmlands for the cultivation of coffee beans, which the company buys for its coffee blends.

The project was first implemented in Amadeo, Cavite and is now being undertaken in some of the remotest and most depressed areas in Mindanao. Juan also co-chairs the National Coffee Development Board – a government organization composed of coffee retailers, traders, farmers, rosters and other coffee experts from the agricultural, business and academic sectors. Ernest Cu, Director, President and CEO of SPI Technologies, Inc. (SPI) and Chairman of eTelecare International, Inc. , is credited for transforming a “mom and pop” business into one of the continent’s largest outsourcing service providers. SPI started in 1980 as a simple data entry service company. The company was listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange in 1991 and has consistently outperformed other stocks in the past 10 years. However, SPI’s core business depended on contracts that were basically project-based, making revenues not quite consistent.

In 1997, Cu joined SPI as president and chief operating officer. He was able to acquire an American operation that was effectively SPI’s first direct sales and marketing organization in the USA. Cu then paved the way for SPI to render a suite of other services in business process outsourcing (BPO), customer relationship management (CRM), and information technology (IT). The company’s services continued to expand and in late 1999, SPI launched eTelecare International, the first call center in the Philippines focused on US outsourcing.

Today, SPI is a market leader as Asia’s largest independent BPO provider, with sales and marketing offices well as production facilities all over the world. SPI is the first company of its kind to be awarded an ISO 9001:2000 quality management certification. Under Cu’s leadership, SPI has differentiated its position, carved its niche, and is now acknowledged as a dependable global provider. DORIS MAGSAYSAY HO President and CEO Magsaysay Maritime Corporation Socially Responsible Entrepreneur 2003 In 1979, Doris Magsaysay Ho joined Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, a company that owned and managed ships. Three short years later, she took the Company’s reins and assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer. Magsaysay Ho invested heavily in training and worked closely with government to establish a regulatory framework. At present, Magsaysay Maritime is the largest manning company in the country with 18,000 men and women trained to work in its own vessels and those of other shipping lines.

When domestic shipping was deregulated in 1986, Magsaysay Maritime diversified further, acquiring the National Maritime Corporation to engage in inter-island and near-sea trades for both dry and liquid cargoes. The company also set up Batangas Bay Carriers, Inc. to operate a fleet of tanker barges on a long-term charter to Shell. In the 1990s, Magsaysay Maritime also ventured into domestic tourism and further expanded its training capabilities. The Magsaysay Institute of Shipping was established in Dasmarinas, Cavite to offer free skills training and upgrading.

Other projects were also implemented, such as the Seafarer’s Savings Program, Educational Assistance Program, and the Oasis Guest House that provides temporary lodging in Manila for seafarers returning to their home provinces. Magsaysay Ho serves as president of the Philippine Interisland Shipowners Association, where she has been actively pursuing the industry’s unification. In 2001, she worked on establishing the Philippine Seafarers Promotions Council with the goal of maintaining the industry’s position as the provider of seafarers for the entire world. MYLA C. Managing Director MDI Group of Companies Woman Entrepreneur 2003 Myla Villanueva was first exposed to information technology as a working student in Santa Clara University in California, USA. Santa Clara Valley was then rapidly being touted as “Silicon Valley” – the center of the high-tech boom in the mid 1980’s. Villanueva settles in the Philippines after graduating in 1988. She soon discovered that only multinational companies offered data network services in the Philippines. She quickly incorporated MDI to be first local network systems integrator in the country.

MDI first focused on connecting computers into a network, but Villanueva was convinced that IP, now known as the language of the Internet, was the technology to bet on. Within a year of its founding, MDI clinched the first major IP infrastructure project in the country – the Social Security System (SSS) data network. Other clients followed such as ABS-CBN and Meralco. In 1995, Villanueva co-founded Microwarehouse; three years later, she transformed Wolfpac, a network security company, into the largest independent mobile applications and content developer.

Wolfpac pioneered in cellphone ringtones, logos, picture messages and text gaming. The GSM Association, a worldwide group of 600 cellular operators, has twice commended Wolfpac as world-class. Villanueva attributes much of her success to the Filipinos’ ingenuity in animation and software programming. She believes that it is in the mobile arena that the Philippines has another shot at promoting itself as a software powerhouse, with huge advantages when pitted against India and China.
